Starting from the reality of everyday life, my work reflects on contemporary existence. The contrasts between grandeur and minuteness, movement and stillness, are two sets of contradictions that I navigate in my creations. The world is vast, but I choose to express it through the small. The times are dynamic, yet I depict them through quiet images. Stripping away the layers of calm contemplation and meticulous depiction, what remains is an introspective self-examination, embodying the sentiment of “IN ME THE TIGER SNIFFS THE ROSE."
Jian Zhang was born in China and now lives in Ottawa. He studied at Fuyang Normal University and the Central Academy of Fine Arts, and completed his MFA at Donghua University,China. He is a member of China Artists Association and Shanghai Artists Association. His early works focused on the theme of toys, participating in many exhibitions and winning awards. After moving to Canada, his work shifted to still life and gradually became quieter and brighter.
