THE ARTIST
Jay Li was educated in the Canton Fine Arts Academy, China and obtained his degree in oil painting in 1985. During his university years, besides obtaining trainings in the fundamentals of oil painting, he was keenly interested in differences and similarities in artistic approaches between Western European and ancient Chinese traditions, whereby he was profoundly influenced in his future artistic development.
Since 1989, Jay has been living outside of China, first a short stay in Australia, then several years in Greece, and finally in Canada since 1998. In the past 27 years, he visited hundreds of great art museums and galleries in Western European countries including those in France, the U.K., Italy, Spain, Netherlands, Canada, and the United States. Those great western European art museums gave him opportunities to further his understanding of the differences and similarities in artistic expressions between the Western world and traditional China and explore his own approach in colour and form to plastic arts. In a way, his paintings in this collection demonstrate his continuous exploration and eMorts to integrate different painting methods, which he set out to do from his college years.
