Acrylic on canvas24 x 36 in. 60.96 x 91.44 cm. "The idea for this was to combine sky fades and neons (my art) with Cree and digital aesthetics (my influences). Unlike the Haida with their totem poles, Cree people mostly did symmetrical, lines and patterns; very minimal designs, but strong designs (think of traditional beadwork). I was also thinking Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollock, who don’t really dive that deep but still have such a cool design element to their work. Like you don’t have to appreciate it beyond the surface, but there is a deeper framework, if you willing to explore."-Lee Stewart

Acrylic on canvas24 x 36 in. 60.96 x 91.44 cm. "Francis Bacon is one of my favourite artists of all time. I especially like his interpretations of the Velazquez portrait of Pope Innocent X. I also like to combine high and low brow ideas. In this instance, I’m using one of Cenobites from the film Hellraiser (1987) as a substitute for the pope. The Cenobites are inter-dimensional beings who cannot distinguish pain from pleasure and travel through time and space looking for, what Georges Bataille would call, 'limit experiences’." -Lee Stewart

Most of my paintings start from sketches and I sort of combine various forms and ideas, into a new one. I think of ideas as components of a bigger machine. That being said, I don’t know what the machine does before I start building it, so I frequently find myself with extra bits that have nowhere to go, but are still really useful and often recurring." - Lee Stewart
