Biography
Entrenched in our daily routines, we rarely stop to examine what is before us. We consistently look at what is in front of us but, so often, our thoughts rest not on the object itself but on what it may once have been, what it might become or how it can serve us. My work seeks to focus the viewer’s attention on natural materials as they are in their present, raw state. It invites them to consider these images as they exist in the moment rather than seeing them from a utilitarian perspective. While it is drawn from the organic and every day, the subject matter of my work defies literal interpretation. The process of printmaking allows me to use repetition, mirrored patterns, compositional harmony and vivid colour to yield images that are ambiguous and yet familiar. My work is rooted in the waterless lithography process. The source imagery I use focuses primarily on wood and my perception of it as an exploited and commodified material. For me, the representation of this widely used organic material mirrors the commodification of other resources around us that are habitually valued only in context of how they can serve us. With the use of repetition, mirroring and colour I take these images and transform them. While they remain readable as organic and from nature, there is no real way to understand them from a figurative perspective. I’m interested in creating large-scale images in which the patterns in my work would become more powerful and create a sense of space thereby imposing upon the viewer and forcing them to bend to their will as opposed to the other way around.
