Carmella Karijo Rother

Carmella Karijo Rother is a mixed media textile artist. Her recent exhibition history includes exhibitions at the Ontario Crafts Council Gallery, the Montreal Centre for Contemporary Textiles, and a City of Ottawa Gallery. Carmella holds a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of Saskatchewan and a Master in Environmental Studies from York University. Self taught as an artist, her previous career in nature interpretation has influenced the perspectives she brings to her art.

Carmella works with Dupioni silk, which she cuts free-hand to create rich, reflective canvases marked with stitching. Her designs are a synergy of colour, texture, line and movement manifested in abstract imagery. Fred Sherwin, arts reporter with Orleans Online, has remarked on her work: “The patterns and shapes radiate from the walls of the gallery in an explosion of colour that is a delight to behold.”
